My focus is on “clawhammer” and two-finger traditional styles. Some of my major influences include Rhiannon Giddens and Doc Watson. I also enjoy pairing singing with banjo accompaniment. My playing is generally on the softer, gentler side rather than bright and aggressive.
I’m excited to work with new beginners as well as folks with some experience in old-time music. I like archival recordings and contemporary musicians but am also interested in creating new music. I am more “music-forward” than “technique-forward,” meaning that while we’ll cover technical basics, I generally encourage students to play by relying on their ears rather than a prescribed technical approach.
Playing music in a social setting is very valuable, so I encourage learners to plug into the local scene and participate.
